Many fans insist on hearing the Chairman of the Board’s authentic vintage sound as millions of fans have experienced it since the 1940’s. For its rich tone and realistic sound reproduction, Frank Sinatra vinyl is the discriminating listener’s choice. Sinatra’s distinctive voice is rich and full on classic vinyl. Not only do they provide high-quality sound, Sinatra LPs include the large, colorful artwork that was featured on the original recordings. For the fan who wants the best of Sinatra, there are many discs to sift through. With dozens of albums and a song list topping 1,100 entries, Sinatra was a hard working entertainer.
Sinatra’s musical catalog can be arranged into three distinct periods. We can get a handle on his productivity by looking at discs he cut on Columbia, Capitol and Reprise. Titles from the three companies are available on vinyl. By many listeners’ standards, the Capitol recordings are top of the heap and an excellent place to start. Test drive some Capitol classics pressed between ’53 and ’60, such as “Come Swing With Me,” “Point of No Return” and “Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely”. A triumphant time for the Chairman, from ’53 to ’60 he not only laid down his best work in the studio, he also won the Academy Award for his performance in “From Here to Eternity”. Acquire a copy of “The Best of the Capitol Years,” released in 1960, to collect the best of of this period.
With the start of the new decade, Sinatra started his own label, Reprise Records, and recorded songs he hand picked. At Reprise, Sinatra had total control over his music, but the song set he produced could not quite stand up to his Capitol work. Although Sinatra continued to oversee projects at Reprise, in 1963, he sold the enterprise to Warner Brothers. In those days, Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford, the self-proclaimed “Rat Pack,” were the definition of cool. In this era, the Rat Pack appeared in the heist film, “Oceans 11”. Make a note to insert “Sinatra and Swingin’ Brass,” “All Alone” and “It Might as Well Be Swing” in your collection.
LPs from the start of the Sinatra catalog include his sessions with Tommy Dorsey. Sinatra and Dorsey cut records for two years, and then Frank hopped on board with Columbia. “The Voice of Frank Sinatra” and “Songs by Sinatra” were bona fide hits then. Columbia pressed representative compilations of Sinatra’s recordings, including “The Best Of The Columbia Years (1943-1952)”.
With a collection that includes some of these classic vinyl recordings, you’ll be studying at the “School of Sinatra”. Place the needle on the record and listen, and soon you’ll find out, if you haven’t already, why his music, like great architecture, is eternal.
